Live: Cold Crows Dead w/ Kagoule

Something beautifully dark is happening to our notions of pop music, and haunting us with every note, beat and word uttered are Cold Crows Dead, a collaborative project from Murray Macleod, the charismatic frontman of The Xcerts, and gifted producer/songwriter Paul Steel (Mika, Empire of the Sun, Pnau, Saint Raymond). Inspired by the melancholic psychedelia of Sparklehorse, the two former housemates began writing music together. A few months later, Mark Linkous, leader of Sparklehorse, committed suicide.

What began as one song has evolved into an 11 track album: ‘I Fear A New World’. Recorded at Paul’s home studio, the musicians used instruments varying from theremin and mellotron, horns and strings, to vintage drum machines, analogue synthesizers and everything in between. They have made use of ‘found sounds’, and somewhat unconventional recording techniques…They recorded themselves drowning in a bathroom sink, recruited an OAP choir to perform at the end of the track ‘Gone’, distorted their vocals, reversed everything that didn’t work, and recruited Stephen John Kalinich to exhibit his poetic mastery on ‘Man In Bleak’.

In December, their debut album ‘I Fear A New World’ is released via Raygun Records. Following that, Cold Crows Dead will be embarking on a UK tour. Their live show is a kaleidoscope of sound, both bleak and uplifting. Come, feed the Crow.
